Dynasty Warriors 2

Dynasty Warriors 2 Review

Dynasty Warriors 2 Overview

Every now and then, certain genres of computer game make a comeback and we all nod and remember the good old days.

Dynasty Warriors 2 brings back the halcyon days of the sideways scrolling beat 'em up, updated for the new millennium and with spiffy new 3-D-graphics, but at heart it's the same bloodthirsty gorefest we all knew and loved on the eight-bit consoles.

It has to be said from the off that this is a one-track game. The basic premise is that the player, taking on the guise of one of a number of feudal Japanese warlords, must lead an army of brave warriors into battle, dicing with the opposition as they go. The armies are staffed with the usual collection of cannon fodder with a variety of captains and other senior leaders thrown in for good measure.

There's a vain attempt at introducing strategy into the mix by allowing the player to stop the action and peruse a battlefield map to see how just far their forces have advanced, but in truth the player's army are a bit lily-livered and seem to leave all the fighting to the boss.

Graphics are very high quality and as your chosen warlord spins and charges into the fray there's a real sensation of the high splendour of ancient Japanese warfare, but what leaves the experience a little flat is the distinct lack of moves which can be executed with the supplied battle sword.

Aside from a couple of aerial moves there are really only half a dozen hacks and slashes which may be applied to the soft flesh of the opposition, removing some of the potential enjoyment factor and the death sequences are beaten foes are a little too sanitised for most with the vanquished foe spinning around, screaming then fading out into the background.

That said, peel aside the superfluous layers and Dynasty Warriors is an excellent beat 'em up which combines all the best bits of the days of yore with the best console technology of the 21st century.

Gameplay is fluid and the addition of power-ups--collected after beating senior opponents or breaking open crates with your weapon--allow for quick saves, energy boosts and more, all serving to make this an enjoyable, if not very short-lived experience. --James Gordon

The Bouncer (PS2)

The Bouncer (PS2) Review

The Bouncer (PS2) Overview

There's only one word to describe The Bouncer, SquareSoft's latest beat-em-up action title for the PlayStation 2: gorgeous. From the second the opening credits kick in this game oozes quality, putting everything that went before it to shame. It's like watching an action film with fight sequences you can direct yourself; the visuals alone are enough to convince the wary that buying a PlayStation 2 is a great idea. The voice acting, too, is among the best yet on a PS2 title and really adds to the atmosphere of the piece--clearly a lot of thought has gone into this, and has paid off greatly.

The plot is fairly straightforward: a 15-year-old girl, who happens to have three burly bouncers for buddies, gets kidnapped by a multi-national corporation. The guys decide to take action; setting off for the corporate HQ, stumbling upon all manner of bizarre and intriguing mysteries.

The Bouncer is, in essence, a fighting game similar to the old Capcom title Final Fight. The bulk of the plot is driven by non-interactive FMV sequences, with the player taking control of one of the three main protagonists at the beginning of the fight sequences--of which there are many. Given the number of moves it's possible to make during the heat of battle, Square have made intelligent use of the DualShock pad, allowing high, medium and low-level attacks, the strength of which can be altered according to how hard you hit the buttons.

Falling as it does between interactive novel and beat-em-up there's a little something here for everyone, and if all else fails The Bouncer is so visually appealing that it will be difficult not to like it. --Chris Russell

Dynasty Warriors 4 (PS2)

Dynasty Warriors 4 (PS2) Review

Dynasty Warriors 4 (PS2) Overview

If you've never played an earlier version of the game, here's what you need to know: Dynasty Warriors is a fighting game series played from the third-person perspective, where you pick a military general as your avatar and fight across sprawling battlefields. The generals all have distinct personalities and there are a few women characters included too. As you campaign, you collect special items such as the Dragon Amulet which increases your Musou gauge (Musou allows you to enact special, prolonged attacks on multiple enemies). You have bodyguards, you kill enemy generals, and along the way your new skill points increase your weapon's power.

With DW4, there are many new additions, only some of which are successful. Charge attacks and items are souped up and truly improved. For example, equipping a magic orb can cause you to freeze enemies in a block of ice. You can edit characters, but with so many good preset ones to choose from, chances are you won't spend a lot of time working on your own. In addition to a better game engine, there's also the option of one-on-one-duels. The maps are immense compared to previous editions, with a lot more variance in what can happen by the end of your mission.

Even with a significant number of new features, it's debatable whether or not Dynasty Warriors 4 is a true overhaul, or just another release to cash in on the popularity of the franchise. Regardless, it's addictive for reasons that almost defy explanation. You just want to clear this act, to get to the next stage, and to reveal the goodies you've received from killing that big boss. It's as simple as that. And at the moment when you can knock down an entire platoon with a couple of hits, well, then you'll join the ranks of the dedicated. --Jennifer Buckendorff

Quantum of Solace (Xbox 360) Specifications

There never was a video game of Casino Royale, but now Activision is making up for lost time with a title that incorporates both Casino Royale and its immediate sequel, Quantum of Solace. It’s primarily a first-person shooter, but it does switch to an over-the-shoulder view when hiding under cover or taking part in interactive cut scenes.
Daniel Craig is a big games fan and has taken a personal interest in the game
Almost everything in the game can be destroyed or damaged
Stealth is just as important as gunplay when you’re James Bond
Close combat switches out of first person view for a more cinematic effect

Just like the Bond movies, the game offers a mixture of action and stealth, with the chance to take down enemies instantly if they don’t see you. You’ll almost always be outgunned, but you’re given clues as to which strategy to take by the changing music.

Bond's aresenal has been slimmed down in the new films, so it makes sense that there aren’t many gadgets in the game. There is an online multiplayer mode that pays homage to past classic Bond games such as GoldenEye 007. Which should hopefully make Bond’s video game comeback as successful as his cinematic return.

Key Features
  • You only live twice: Recreate the stories of both Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace in one game, including deleted scenes and new side missions.
  • Duty calls: The game uses the same graphics technology as Call of Duty 4, including bullets that realistically pass through wood and other materials.
  • You know his name: The game features not only the voice and likeness of Daniel Craig, but also Judi Dench as M, Mathieu Amalric as villain Dominic Greene, and Olga Kruylenko as Camille.
  • Shaken not stirred: A mix of first- and third-person viewpoints allows for both shooter action and tense stealth-based exploration.
  • Licence to kill: Battle friends in the online mode in a wide range of game types.
About the Developer: Treyarch
One of publisher Activision’s biggest internal studios, Treyarch have worked on many of the company’s best known titles, from the Spider-Man movie tie-ins and spin-offs to several of the Call of Duty sequels and, of course, the new James Bond game, Quantum of Solace.

Tao Feng: Fist of the Lotus (Xbox)

Tao Feng: Fist of the Lotus (Xbox) Review

Tao Feng: Fist of the Lotus (Xbox) Overview

From a few of the guys who gave us the 2-D classic Mortal Kombat comes Tao Feng: Fist of the Lotus, a gorgeous 3-D fighting game that dares to be a bit different from the norm.

In the world of Tao Feng the Pacific Northwest is called New China. Two rival factions, with six members each, fight to gain two mystical tablets that grant awesome power. On the side of the Pale Lotus we have 90-year-old Master Sage, attractive Jade Dragon, a hothead appropriately named Fiery Phoenix, cat-like Fierce Tiger, level-headed cop-by-day Divine Fist, and the enigmatic and metallic Iron Monk. The bad guys, called the Black Mantis, are: Wulong Goth--looking crazy in a praying mantis costume, the mystical Fatalist, the alluring Divinity, the scary Geist, and a hulking brute named Exile. Each fighter has his own fighting style, powers, and core strategy, and the game design is such that you have to relearn the game with each new fighter.

The slower pace of the fighting in Tao Feng might put off genre fans looking for something more frantic. The controls are simple and include a few innovations. For example: pushing back on the game pad blocks, but too much blocking might result in losing the use of your limbs. The rest of the buttons are two basic punches, two kicks, all modified by the direction you press and the use of the shoulder buttons and jumping attacks. You can even taunt your foe, which, like hitting them, charges your Chi bar. Chi can be unleashed in a devastating attack with the white button, and this attack is also modified by how you use the direction pad. The result is a fluid game of blocking, striking, and stringing combos, and occasionally taking advantage of your Chi powers to take out your opponent.

There's a Quest mode that challenges you to beat the other faction one at a time for pieces of the mystical tablet. Survival mode has you trying to beat as many opponents as possible with a single health bar. Versus mode lets you stage a battle in any arena you like and for multiple players there's a tournament mode. The game looks great and features arenas filled with hazards and breakable objects. The only problem with the game is that some animation bugs didn't get squashed before the game shipped--when executing attacks characters sometimes instantly jerk into a new stance. Fortunately the underlying gameplay is strong enough that a player can forgive such faults, and concentrate on the gory action instead. --Bob Andrews

WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 (PS2)

WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 (PS2) Review

Im writing this review in response to what a reviewer said about when you use hornswaggle in the match and it freezes? well my copy works perfectly fine. My only gripe is where is Stone Cold Steve Austin?,The rock?,Hulk Hogan? and numerous other legends. Instead we get treated to such unlockable delights as Snitsky,Boogyman,Layla, some masked man and a soldier called Tony!!! Who wants to play with those?!!
Positively though, there is more arenas and better matches, such as the inferno and gauntlet match. Graphics are top draw for a ps2 machine and the story lines are good and dont take forever to complete.
Overall for a ps2 game,its very good.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (Sony PS3) Review

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (Sony PS3) Overview

Details

The expansive story, created under direction from George Lucas, is set during the largely unexplored era between Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. In it, players will assist the iconic villain in his quest to rid the universe of Jedi - and face decisions that could change the course of their destiny.

As its name implies, The Force Unleashed completely re-imagines the scope and scale of the Force by taking full advantage of newly developed technologies that will be seen and experienced for the first time: Digital Molecular Matter (DMM), by Pixelux Entertainment, and euphoria by NaturalMotion Ltd. Paired with the powerful Havok Physicsâ"¢ system, these new technologies create gameplay only possible on the new generation of consoles. DMM incorporates the physical properties of anything in the environment so that everything reacts exactly like it should - wood breaks like wood, glass shatters like glass, plants on the planet Felucia bend like plants on the planet Felucia would, and more. Meanwhile, as a revolutionary behavioural-simulation engine, euphoria enables interactive characters to move, act and even think like actual human beings, adapting their behaviour on the fly and resulting in a different payoff every single time.

WWF SmackDown: Just Bring It Platinum

WWF SmackDown: Just Bring It Platinum Review

The other 2 WWF Smackdowns have not disappointed and WWF Smackdown: Just Bring It is no exception. With 35 wrestlers to compete with this Smackdown maybe the best in the series thus far. Gameplay wise you have several options. In Exibiton, compete against the PS2 or against up to 3 friends in many match types, including the usual Single, Tag, Hardcore and Survival match types, as well as Hell in a Cell, Last Man Standing, Iron Man, Table and the 2 out of 3 Fall Special match. Slobberknocker mode is also enjoyable , where you compete as one wrestler and beat others, one by one, in a certain amount of time. The Season mode is fun and has come along a bit from the slow Smackdown 2: Know Your Role. You compete in matches and storylines based on the answers you give in conversations with other wrestlers. The only (and possibly big) flaw in this is that it is quite short, the Season lasts a maximum of 3 matches. To complete the game you must unlock all the items, by playing season over and over until they're all unlocked. These are hidden wrestlers and arenas etc. Although it sounds repetitive it is genrally fun. Create a Stable and Create a Manager are both good if you are a hardcore fan of wrestling, and the Create a Wrestler is the most detailed yet out of all wrestling games. So on the whole you have a fun wrestling game with brilliant muli-player options and fun Season mode as well as other fully playable modes. This is a yes for wrestling fans.

WWF SmackDown: Just Bring It Platinum Overview

Those cheeky chappies from the World Wrestling Federation pound their way onto the PlayStation 2 in the newest release in the Smackdown series, and manage to entertain to the max on the way. Fans of the earlier American wrestling games should feel right at home here: there are a huge number of stars from the show on hand to mete out punishment in a wide variety of interesting ways. Newcomers should have no difficulty either, as the controls are a dream to use.

Just Bring It provides so many battle modes it's hard to keep track of what they are--if "Hell in a Cell" is your thing then go for it, but don't miss "TLC" (tables, ladders and chairs) and the "Royal Rumble" along the way; all are faithfully recreated for your grappling pleasure. And grappling is where it's at. The Smackdown combat system is about as good as it gets. Timing is the key to a good offence: lunge towards your opponent too early and you'll leave yourself wide open, get it just right and you'll take hold in time to execute one of numerous different moves designed to make the audience wince.

Being on the receiving end isn't just a case of taking the punishment, however. A counter move is included to return or block punches or twist and twirl out of the path of an incoming hold--top stuff indeed. Keen to add that authentic touch, the developers have included the big entrance scenarios for each of the superstars, complete with signature tunes and Titantron videoscreen introductions.

The only downside to a really great game is the amount of storage space it gobbles on the average PS2 memory card--4 MB, which seems overly generous by any standard. This minor niggle aside, Just Bring It is a very entertaining title which should keep the average player occupied for months.--Chris Russell

WWF Attitude

WWF Attitude Review

wwf attitude definitely has attitude.the many match optoins amazing and its one of the only wrestlin games with a whole lotta blood in it.it has all the great superstars plus all their finisher and trademark moves.the create a superstar is great with so many different clothes and faces to chose from.this game is truly great.

WWF Attitude Overview

WWF Attitude is just like its subjects: big. Over 40 World Wrestling Federation wrestlers--with bigger-than-life bodies and personalities to match--take to the ring, including The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Undertaker, D-Generation X and Triple H. Wrestle as an individual or tag team, create your own pay-per-view event, or choose from a wide variety of options for matches and gameplay.

As the wrestlers come out, their theme music is played, and they go through their trademark moves. From there the action gets a little slow. While the crowd sounds very realistic, the actual moves are executed rather slowly. Plus Acclaim has included a function that causes the wrestlers to lock arms if they get too close. This is designed to keep a player from using the same moves over and over again. It doesn't work--an entire match can be won by just hitting the kick button. What it does do is force numerous arm locks that do little damage and can turn monotonous. However, executing a great move like a body slam is cool--when it works.

Hard-core professional wrestling fans will appreciate the accurate character models and faithful reproductions of signature moves of their favourite wrestlers. While those who are into fast and furious wrestling action will be better served looking elsewhere, fans who enjoy watching the pros will enjoy this game's cinematic attitude. --Allen Stewart

Samurai Warriors: State of War (PSP)

Samurai Warriors: State of War (PSP) Review

The only reason i have a PSP is to play on my long train journeys to work every day. After having dynasty warriors and pro evolution soccer i decided to get a new game and got this.

Same thing as dynasty warriors. All you do is you go around and slash the enemy except instead of being set in China we are in Japan.

If you are a fan of this genre you will like it and infact this is better so then either Dynasty warriors and Dynasty warriors 2nd evolution on the PSP. You have more of a feel for the characters and also its nice having little missions to do instead of just wearing the enemy down. Now you have to kill certain officers or just hack as many people as you can in 60 seconds.

Again if you are a fan like me of the Koei Samurai and Dynasty warrior titles you will like this. If you hate Dynasty and Samurai warriors then dont buy it because it is more of the same. Owning all 3 of them (Dynatsy warriors 2nd evolution on Japanese import) and you are looking to get one of them then i would suggest this one.

Hori Arcade Fighting Stick (PS3)

Hori Arcade Fighting Stick (PS3) Review

First of all id like to comment on the delivery time of this item I ordered it on Saturday 20th at about 19:00 and it arrived by 9am on the Monday.

Well since I got this stick mainly for street fighter 4 and it is a very good stick the buttons have a good feel to them and a nice sound when you hit them, The stick its self is a square grate and at first I had a few problems but after a little practice you will soon be back firing hadukens on demand over all I have no problems with this fighting stick and for the money its very good value for money.

Oh and the stick has a 3 meter USB cable which also works with ps2 and i think ps1 software ran through your ps3 also works with pc. The stick also has a nice weighty feel so it doesn't fly of your lap when playing.

Only down side and its not really a down side but the key format go's L1,Square,Triangle,R1 and for street fighter at least id prefer it to be square,triangle,R1,L1 but since you can change button layout in any game its not really a major fault with the stick.

so over all I would highly recommend this product.

"A good collection, but perhaps better for nostalgia than gameplay" 2009-07-19
By C. Griffiths (UK)
When I was a kid the Neo-Geo was a console of legend. No-one I knew owned one and the only time I ever saw it played was on the odd episode of Gamesmaster. It was a ludicrously expensive system with even more ludicrously expensive games but those games looked so much better than anything I got out of my SNES.

As such I bought this game purely so that I could finally own some of the games I'd yearned to play about 15 years ago, and to be honest, it's a bit of a mixed bag. Obviously graphics that were dazzling back in the early '90s are completely unremarkable now but the gameplay makes at least some of the games worthwhile.

The Neo-Geo's game catalogue was always dominated by 2D fighting games. Reflecting this half of the 16 titles on offer here are fighters. Fighting games are always considerably more fun as a multi-player experience and as such this collection only really shines when you have a few friends round.

It's also worth noting that this game is also available on the Playstation 2 and PSP - if you have the choice the Wii version is definitely the best bet as the other two suffer from slowdown and have fewer controller options.

The majority of the games included in the set have been (or soon will be) released on the Wii Virtual Console where they cost 900 points a pop. If you plan on buying more than a few of those then this set is a far cheaper option (with the added benefit of not using storage space).

Below are some very brief descriptions of the 16 games you get:

Art of Fighting (1992) - unsurprisingly this is a fighting game. Only two characters are playable in the 'Story Mode' but eight become available in 'VS mode' (10 if you cheat a bit).

Baseball Stars 2 (1992) - again the clue is in the title, a genuinely fun, cartoonish baseball game.

Burning Fight (1991) - a fun side-scrolling fighter in the style of Streets of Rage or Double Dragon. Three playable characters to choose from.

Fatal Fury: King of Fighters (1991) - the first of SNK's Fatal Fury one-on-one fighting games.

The King of Fighters '94 (1994) - the first of SNK's 'King of Fighters' series which spun off from the Fatal Fury franchise (the inter-relations of all these titles can get a bit confusing).

King of the Monsters (1991) - a Godzilla-style fighting game in which you choose between one of six monsters and do battle in a Japanese city, initially fun but soon gets tiresome, this also has some of the worst graphics of any games in the collection.

Last Resort (1992) - an R-Type style shooter that's particularly tough (though a bit short).

Magician Lord (1990) - a tricky platform game and a nice change of pace for the set after all the fighting games.

Metal Slug (1996) - the classic side-scrolling shooter, not the best of the series, if you enjoy it then I'd recommend picking up the Metal Slug Anthology for the Wii which contains the first 6 games plus Metal Slug X.

Neo Turf Masters (1996) - a decent enough golf game.

Samurai Showdown (1993) - an excellent weapon-based head-to-head fighting game. One of the best games in the collection.

Sengoku (1991) - a curious beat-em-up in which you can be a ninja or a cowboy. A fair bit of fun.

Shock Troopers (1997) - somewhere between Super Smash TV and Chaos Engine (both great games) - a lot of fun on multi-player.

Super Sidekicks 3: The Next Glory (1995) - a cartoonish football game in a similar vein to the golf and baseball ones before.

Top Hunter (1994) - a nice little side-scrolling platform game.

World Heroes (1992) - frustratingly you have to unlock this game by getting achievements in the others. It's well worth getting though because it's probably the oddest fighter of the lot. A scientist named Doc Brown (Back to the Future reference there I assume) has invented a time machine and decided to gather various historical figures so that they can all have a big old fight (there's also a shape-shifting alien in there for good measure). If you ever wanted to see Joan of Arc fight Rasputin then this is the game for you.

All in all I'd say this is a good set and well worth the money (particularly if you were tempted to buy any of the games on Virtual Console where they cost much more). Just bear in mind that a lot of the charm of these games stems from their history and they probably won't stand up too well to modern expectations.

 "Why?" 2008-10-23
By S. Moore (Southampton, UK)
Best avoided everyone - what is frankly the worst fighting game on the Wii. It features lots of character with disappointing power-ups!! and you use the various input devices to little or no real affect. There are some frankly rather dumb mini-games that would insult the intelligence of most users!

"Finally Naruto for the Wii!!!" 2008-05-26
By G. K. CHAMPION (UK)
I hope they do another Naruto game for the Wii because I'm really enjoying it!

The controls are quite easy, but the booklet and on screen instructions explain them badly - it's easier to go into training mode and work them out!

With the European version you can't switch to the Japanese voices like you could with the other games.

You can't seem to wi-fi battle either which would be ace.

But even without these features it is mega fun and a must have for any Naruto fan!

"To counteract to the one -star review" 2008-04-27
By depth_perception
To even out the balance of what is frankly one of the best fighting games you can buy on the Wii.

It covers the same arcs that were in CON 2 & CON 3. It features over 20 characters (some with power-ups), and you use either the wiimote, wiimote and nunchuck, or classic controller. It also has smart new mini-games which utilize the wiimote controls, such as Rasengan Training, Shuriken Targets and a game where you have to find out who the real naruto is out of a bunch of clones.

"Wasn't able to play it because of low resolution ..." 2008-04-10
By Wilkinson J.W.
First, Iknew that I would be disappointed because it wasn't possible to have it in Japanese (this is the European Version) but when I tried to play it on my Wii, it automatically ask to install an upgrade. Because I don't have anything "illegal" installed on my Wii, I did the upgrade. I then got ready to play but impossible as I don't have a TV and am playing on my High resolution computer screen and the max resolution for this game is 60Hz, therefore it just wrote on the screen something such as "cannot use this resolution - switch to 60HZ.."..

I'm sure that this game might be cool but unfortunately I wasn't able to play it....I'm so so so so gutted as I am a huge fan of Naruto .....
